De vereniging Proefdiervrij
De vereniging Proefdiervrij is de grootste organisatie in Nederland die zich inzet voor de belangen van proefdieren. Wij onderscheiden ons door ons volledig en uitsluitend in te zetten voor proefdieren.
Proefdiervrij combineert twee succesfactoren in één organisatie:

*een actiegroep met creatieve en prikkelende campagnes en acties
*een betrouwbare professionele realistische gesprekspartner over de dierproefproblematiek.
Proefdiervrij is daarmee dé autoriteit op het gebied van dierproeven.

Vervanging van alle dierproeven
De ambitie van Proefdiervrij is de vervanging van alle dierproeven. Wat niet wil zeggen dat wij tegen de gezondheid van mensen zijn. Proefdiervrij richt zich op politiek en wetenschap en informeert het publiek om gezamenlijk te werken aan een toekomst zonder dierproeven.
Wij vinden het tijd voor proefdiervrije technieken.

Mensen als proefkonijn?
Proefdiervrij trekt zich het lot van proefdieren erg aan. Maar, zoals gezegd, wij zijn daarmee niet tegen gezondheid van mensen. En Proefdiervrij vindt zieke mensen ook zeker geen alternatief voor proefdieren. Daarvoor zijn betere oplossingen te bedenken, zoals celkweken, orgaankweken en computermodellen. Daarop moet veel meer tijd en energie worden ingezet.
Soms zie je echter navrante dingen gebeuren, waarbij rigide wetgeving met betrekking tot dierproeven de mogelijke genezing van mensen zelfs in de weg kan zitten. Bijvoorbeeld dat veelbelovende medicijnen voor levensbedreigende ziektes, zoals AIDS, niet gebruikt mogen worden door patiënten die ten dode opgeschreven zijn en die zelf aangeven het middel te willen gebruiken. De reden dat deze patiënten de medicijnen niet mogen gebruiken is dat de dierproeven nog niet zijn afgerond.

Vereniging Proefdiervrij ('Dutch Association against Animal Testing' )

Proefdiervrij aims at abolishing all scientific experiments on animals
in the Netherlands. Its focus is on the promotion of alternative methods of research. By means of public activities (such as petitions and demonstrations) and by bilateral dialogues Proefdiervrij seeks to raise awareness of the plight of laboratory animals. Proefdiervrij urges politicians, the scientific research community, and industries to abolish testing on animals altogether.

Founded in 1897, Proefdiervrij is a non-governmental organisation
whose activities are exclusively sponsored by its members. At present, over 40.000 Dutch citizens support Proefdiervrij.

In past decades, Proefdiervrij has been quite successful in reducing the amounts of laboratory animals in the Netherlands. Since the first registration of experiments on animals, the number of experiments has dropped by more than 50%. In 1981, 1.5 million animals were registered as test subjects in the Netherlands. As of 2003, the latest figures mention a total number of just over 600.000 animals, of which mice (48%; 296.210), rats (22%; 139.152), chickens (15%; 93.877) and fish (4%, 25.046) are the most commonly used.

This reduction is partly due to the installment of the 1977 Experiments on Animals Act, regulating the use of laboratory animals. In 1997, this Act was considerably extended and updated, in response to pressure from Proefdiervrij and other organisations. Throughout the Netherlands, it is now forbidden to use animals for cosmetics research. The LD-50 test, in which many laboratory animals were killed in a horrible way, became banned as well. Furthermore it disallows the use of pets or animals from the wild. Nevertheless, 600.000 laboratory animals is still a dazzling number, and we aim at greatly reducing this amount in the near future. The Netherlands was the last country in Europe to abandon the use of apes in animal testing. Proefdiervrij is now aiming at a ban on the use of all other monkeys in Dutch research centres as well.

From an international perspective, Proefdiervrij has played a significant part in InterNICHE, the International Network for Human Education. InterNICHE is a global network comprising students, teachers and animal campaigners, focusing on animal use and alternatives within biological science, medical and veterinary medical education.
